Travel information for Hawaii
The isolation of the
Hawaiian Islands
in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and the wide range of
environments to be found on high islands located in and near the
tropics, has resulted in a vast array of endemic flora and
fauna. The volcanic activity and subsequent erosion created
impressive geological features. Those conditions make Mount
Waiʻaleʻale the wettest place on earth; it averages 11.7 m (460
in) of rain annually.
The first "visitors" to the
Islands of
Hawaii came not knowing what to expect — or even that the
Islands existed. It is generally believed Hawaii's first
permanent inhabitants sailed in voyaging canoes from the
southern hemisphere islands of the Marquesas, between 300 and
800 A.D. Later waves of settlers arrived by the 12th century,
this time from Tahiti.
Comprised of six tropical islands
in the south pacific,
Hawaii is a picturesque visitor destination for people
worldwide (particularly from the continental U.S.A.). Here,
visitors can enjoy the tranquility that comes with strolling
along the beach at night or the adventure of activities like
hang gliding and surfing. Oahu, the most populated of the
Islands, features the world-class resort city of Honolulu and
its well-known Waikiki Beach. |
